i first met michael hauben the fall of 1994. we were disc jockeys at wbar
(barnard college radio) and he was my relief dj. he'd always come in
early and we'd talk before he started his set. since i was doing punk and
he was doing ambient music, the big question was always how to do the
segue from my material into his, a debate through which we created some
fairly hilarious broadcasts. michael was an integral part of the wbar
family from 1994 until he left columbia, and he leaves his mark as one of
the first dj's at the station to do electronic music.

over the years i was fortunate to get to know michael both as a colleague
at columbia and, far more importantly, as a friend. michael was a
rock-solid supporter of everything i ever did, and he was one of the early
advocates of our music when we started working on the freight elevator
quartet. i speak for everyone in the band when i say that we've lost a
good friend.

michael had many friends, both on- and off-line, and brought a wonderful
sense of optimism and encouragement wherever he went. we are all blessed
to have known him.

best to you all.
