Fuked up, oh fuked up - that was this how the Orb experience went this time at the Roseland - EVERYTHING was on, the crazy kicked up and destroyed beats, the insane ambience that was a godsend but left many shaking their heads, the visuals - oh man the visuals - no need for chemical substances to reach the ultimate trip on this special occasion, although I do not doubt those immbibing in something special will also fondly remember this occasion. Mind I don't forget they played music from MOST of their recorded music - Adventures, U.F.Orb, Assassin, Pommes Frites, FFWD, and of course Orbvs Terarvm. In addition they played other special tidbits - Word Up! by Cameo at one point, the Ren & Stimpy theme song Happy Happy Joy Joy and in closing the main set, the On Top of Old Smokey instrumental. The Orb is a full band on tour, with the good Doctor Alex Patterson on mixing board and sampler, Thomas Fehlmann, DJ Lewis, drumer Nick Burton, bass player Simon Philips, and engineer Andy Hughes. Hell there was even a drum solo at the beginning of some song! 2.5 hours - started at 1:30am, ended about 4am, and Roseland got it RIGHT for a change. I enjoyed this show throughoughly with both my mind and body, and left right after the Orb - both to give myself a rest and to save the impression of the show for all of time. Last time the Orb came through, I stayed for the rest of the DJs and watched the sun raise from the top of my dorm. However, that show is wiped out from my memory by the constant barage of beats and sound from the remaining DJs. What was special? The music - as usual the Orb spruces up their material to get the audience dancing like crazy, but wow - this is no ordinary techno show or rave. Now those are fine, but the Orb really dissected their beats and provided us with an insane melody of bass-stompers that got into your head and would not leave. I don't know how to describe the music than to say it was fuked up, of course in the best possible way! It kept on going, each song after a while felt like the finale, but NO, the band played on...The audience ate it up, but there were many who just could not and did not understand, and I truly felt for them - Cameo's Word Up played over the PA in the middle and many left to sit down - and this was just one of the many FUNNY bits that filtered throughout the set. The band just had some major fun, and well, some could no understand Oh those monstor distored beats - that's all there is to say! Sometimes it was hard to dance, but that never lasted - once my brainwaves matched Alex's, off I went. Pogo seemed to be a popular way of enjoying the masterfully crafted sonic outbursts. I sure hope Intermodo and Island release a live album of this tour a la Live 93 - Evil Bro. [Hint Hint Hint!!] PLAYLIST -------- [Not exact, and not in order, but you can get this from others.] HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY Theme Song - FUN OOBE His Imortal Logness - YES YES!!!! THANK you... Others off of Pommes Fritzes (don't recall exactly) Blue Room Tower of Dub Assassin Klangtest from FFWD Word Up by Cameo - sure cleared the dance floor! I think both Valley and Plateu Huge Ever Growing Brain Oxbow Lakes Perhaps Star 6 7 8 9 and either Back Side of the Moon or Spanish Castles in Space (methinks) Little Fluffy Clouds - OF COURSE On top of Old Smokey Instrumental One (or TWO??) of the previous songs was the encore One or two songs which I did not recognize - perhaps remixes of other bands OR of their own songs!! [Note: Also I don't remember hearing Slug Dub!!!] Astralwerks also gave a showing of Future Sound of London's new video, [forget name]. This was nice and featured several songs (notably Slider) from the original release of ISDN, with the new songs which are on the rereleases of the Far Out Sun of Lung EP and ISDN LP. NICE graphics - I enjoyed the computer renderings the best, but the video featured some edited live shots of people underwater, and perhaps FSOL themselves playing in some park?? There were three T-Shirts for sale -Navy Blue with the Oxbow Lakes figure on the front and an outlined map of the USA with Tovrvm Orbvs America lettered underneath -Lighter Blue T with new Orb Symbol on front and Tovrvm Orbvs America -Black T with weird new Orb logo on front and back - sort of lettering in both white and black making it hard to understand unless you were there - but helping to obscure it and making it less of an advertisment. Really nice shirts - better than last tours. I picked up one of the lighter blue ones and really should have purchased a black one. In Summary, a massively amazing time had by myself and my friends - try Orb Live someday, you might be surprised! -Michael PS: Check out the following ORB and Music URLs Fan page: http://hyperreal.com/music/artists/orb/www/index.html"> Promotional Label Page: http://tito.hyperlink.com/orb/ Mailing List Archives: http://www.rt66.com/lazlo/MailingLists.html#ORB Image Archives: http://www.rt66.com/lazlo/Lists/OrbImageArchive.html Lazlo's Discography: http://www.rt66.com/ftp/usr2/lazlo/discographies/orb My Web Musical Connections: http://www.columbia.edu/~hauben/music/ My Music Reviews: http://www.columbia.edu/~hauben/text/QuickMusic-Reviews.html Orb Newsgroup: alt.music.orb Rave Newsgroup: alt.rave Techno Newsgroup: alt.music.techno Ambient Newsgroup: rec.music.ambient ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Hauben Columbia College'95 Editor of Amateur Computerist Newsletter by day hauben@columbia.edu by night Netizen's Cyberstop
