TRUMYSTIC SOUND SYSTEM last night Went to see the NYU show at Irving Plaza last night. When I arrived WE were on the stage with some ambient creations - they gradually (and so subtly) brought in the beat to create some wicked onthefly jungle textures and mixtures. They are absolutly one of my favorite NYC acts and I have to run out and buy their album now that I have some ready cash ;) (hell what else do people recommend? I have a years worth of music to catch up on - Stereolab, Exist Dance comp, Autechre, Orbital, Basement Jaxx, Banco de Gaia, the list just goes on and on and on...sigh) The venue never filled up that much and I never felt so young as I did last night - teenagers created quite a scene. They were supposed to be college students (student id got checked twice) but all looked like they were pre-frosh, heh. It was quite a scene with kids bouncing from friend to friend to friend and my being out of place in my work clothes - bleh. Wish I could have danced but rested my twisted ankle. The energy was great because there were some excellent dancers in the crowd and WE were quite inspiring. Next up were the TRUMYSTIC SOUND SYSTEM featuring Dr. Israel, Ish, Soothsayer, & Divaship. I had thought the group was a bigger collective, but the band seemed to do alright. I loved Dr Israel's voice - a super smooth soulful raggae feel to it. The band put out a mix of dub, raggae, hiphop, and jungle. Songs such as their version of "I'm a junglist" "pressure" and the like came from the album of theirs that I had and were quite fluid and danceable. Twas sad the crowd never grew a whole lot for this band, but who can expect NYU students to have much taste ;) LOL On stage were a bass player, sax player, dr israel and diva singing (diva also doing vocalizations), Soothsayer rapping and beats galore. At one point Dr Israel said something to the effect of what makes a show different than a reherasal is the audience - when he was trying to get the crowd into the music - I guess the band was disappointed by the tunrout but I think it was the promoters/NYU that didn't do enough work. Definitly recommend seeing these guys again when they play next (both bands ;) ) cheers and TGIF!!!! .\.\ichael -- sentinel ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Hauben Teachers College Dept. of Communication Netizens Netbook http://www.columbia.edu/~hauben/netbook/ WWW Music Index http://www.columbia.edu/~hauben/music/ Amateur Computerist Newsletter http://www.columbia.edu/~hauben/acn/ Netizens Cyberstop
