Byzar at Exit Art, October 4, 1996

Went to the shape of sound exhibit at Exit Art on Friday night.
Saw Sheldon and Amir there. Not too many people were there - but
a nice environment. Sort of neat, Byzar played. Great hairstyles
on these guys ;) THey were mostly mucking around, improvising and
stuff. I didn't feel there was much cohesiveness to what they were playing
though. I sat in an inner tube and leaned back on a pole - really
really relaxing - some beats, but not many. The performance was
part of the exhibit rather than vice versa -- which was unusual
to begin with, but was interesting.

As for the visual part, there were two galleries - one really
shut down from the other artist and the one open. weird things -
like a helmet made of two bullhorns set up with the mouth part at
the ears, or a hat with metal/tin elephant like trunk for ear pieces. 
The best visual thing was the most involved, a hybrid
installation/computer art thing made by Jarion Lanier -- climbed
into a miniroom which had like the inside of a waterbed in it for
people to lay on that was clear. Underneath was the projection of
the computer designs, and you stared up to the top to see
yourself and the computer art in a mirror above. Really like an
issolation tank in a room - relaxing and mind-blowing at the same
time.
