Ameoba at Den of Thieves -- NYC -- December 22, 1996 The music was impressive a few nights ago at Ameoba. Hadn't been to Den of Thieves in a while (last was for Cell a bit back) and so passed by the spot when walking east on Houston - oh well :) Thomas Fehlman came on about midnightish and spun atmospheric jungle to my surprise. I was a bit saddened since I expected more of an ambient or houish mix from him based on his work with Sun Electronic and the Orb. However, some folks on the ambient list have been saying the latest Sun Electric EP has a jungle tinge to it, so I shouldn't have been surprised. It was a good mix of music, and I was enjoying it specially as with more and more exposure I'm growing fonder of the stuff. However, and this was curious, is there that much out there or did he stick to pop favorites? I really felt I had heard more than 50% of what he spun just in my little exposure to drum 'n bass lately. Other DJs included some really eclectic music which was nice. After Fehlman, the set opened with quirky techo ala Aphex Twin & Muziq -- moved into some dub and raggae, and then closed up with more nice usually-unheard out techno. The last DJ before I left was spinning that mixture of prog rock, lounge favs and the like. Other highlights included getting a present of a spinning top, seeing a fellow? on blades in a frosty the snowman suit, and watching the visual person's baby dance to the tunes.
